History of the Association of Breast Surgery at BASO
The BASO Breast Group was formed in 1995 and was chaired by Roger Blamey. Its membership originally consisted of general surgeons, who specialised in the treatment of breast cancer.
The Association's National Committee is linked to the NHS BSP, with the regional NHS BSP QA Surgeons sitting on it. Symptomatic representatives are now elected for each region also. The Association has developed the Audit of Screen-detected cancers in the UK along with the NHS BSP and the West Midlands Cancer Intelligence Unit. It is has also worked to develop an audit of symptomatic breast cancers (now the BCCOM project).
In 2002 the BASO Breast Group changed its name to the Association of Breast Surgery at BASO. Its status as a branch of BASO ~ ACS was confirmed the same year. The membership of the ABS at BASO now includes all members of the multidisciplinary team. Its Conference is held annually in the spring or early summer. It also has a well established Trainees Meeting, held each year in June and has now run two meetings for Breast Care Nurses.
