Professor Richard Sullivan

Richard Sullivan is Professor of Cancer and Global Health at King’s College London (KCL), where he serves as Director of the Institute of Cancer Policy and the Centre for Conflict & Health Research. He is a senior advisor on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) to the World Health Organization and multiple national governments, and leads the World Bank Group’s cancer programme.

Professor Sullivan is a Fellow of the Centre for Global Development and the UK representative to the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Scientific Governing Council. He chairs several global research programmes focused on cancer systems strengthening, the political economy of cancer, pharmaceutical policy, and cancer surgery.

His work at the intersection of conflict and health encompasses health security intelligence, global health security, and strengthening health systems in fragile and conflict-affected settings. He also holds senior advisory roles across a range of organisations involved in global health security.

Originally trained in surgical oncology (urology), Professor Sullivan holds a PhD in Biochemistry from University College London. He previously served as Clinical Director of Cancer Research UK for over a decade, and as Director of the Council for Emerging National Security Affairs.

Richard joined the BASO National Committee in November 2025.
