BASO Statement on the NHS Cancer Plan 2026

BASO~ACS and the National Committee for Cancer Surgery have issued a joint response to the National Cancer Plan published by the Department of Health and Social Care on 4 February 2026.

BASO welcomes the plan and supports many of its stated ambitions. However, the document represents a missed opportunity to address some of the most significant and persistent constraints affecting the delivery of cancer care within the NHS

We are all working in incredibly challenging circumstances. The global landscape has changed in such a short space of time with the stark reality of the Coronavirus COVID-19 crisis. As healthcare workers, we shall all be facing significant challenges in the weeks and months ahead.

EUROPEAN EXAMS

BASO~ACS works very closely with our European sister organisation ESSO promoting and encouraging the sharing of ideas and expertise with our European surgical colleagues. We encourage our members to take full advantage of the benefits of this close working relationship and the complementary ESSO membership all BASO members recieve.

Please visit the ESSO website where you will see details of the European courses and masterclasses, scientific congresses, fellowships and bursaries that are available.  We also encourage BASO members, especially senior trainees, to consider applying for the European Board of Surgery examinations in either Surgical Oncology (predominantly focussed on visceral cancer surgery) or Breast Surgery.
